Pneu-Hyd Industries was commissioned by a customer in the marine industry to design a rugged custom welded hydraulic cylinder able to withstand the demands of the harsh marine environment. This cylinder would mount to a crane positioned on the deck of a ship to lift buoys from the water, and the customer needed a no rust solution. The traditional chrome plated rod we normally provide would not be sufficient; so a special nickel plated rod with a .001" chrome layer was determined to be the best solution over other alternatives. It would offer a superior corrosion resistance to the saltwater environment. The cylinder was constructed from various types of steel, employing CNC machining, saw cutting, and certified welding methods.

The finished cylinder had a long, 58.00” stroke; a 5.50” bore size, and a 2.500” rod featuring a chrome overlay and 100K tensile strength. The closed length of the cylinder was 76.00”, and there was one trunnion mount on the barrel and welded tangs to the blank end and the rod end with a 2.75" pin. Special attachments included multiple port locations for various plumbing configurations, four 3/4 - 16 O-ring boss ports. Operating pressure was 1700 psi, and the unit was completely tested at intervals throughout fabrication as well as after completion to assure quality and accuracy. Turnaround time for this project was 5 weeks, completed to customer specification.
